I have been marketing online for years now, have made thousands of dollars and have made a ton of mistakes along the way.

I am hoping this post will help those struggling and shed a bit of light on what you need to do to make Internet Money.

1. Create a Plan First.
The first mistake I made in the very beginning was not creating a plan. Your internet marketing plan should include:

- The type of products you’re going to promote.
- How will you promote those products?
- Who is your Target Market?
- What tasks do you need to complete?
- How long will each task take?
- Will you build or buy the Websites?
- How much money do you need? (Domains, Web hosting and Advertising.)
- How long is it going to take you to make your money back?
- How much money you can invest monthly? (articles, PPC, social media, content, new domains, ad creation including video and one way linking.)

It really pays off when you take 1-2 weeks to create a good plan. Having a good plan that you’ll actually follow, will help you to stay on track and help to avoid the dreaded non productivity syndrome. If you don’t plan these things, you could be in for a rude awakening.

2. Checking Traffic Stats.
Another mistake many people make is not tracking the traffic and sales coming in from their websites. It’s very important that you track everything so you can see what’s working and what’s not working.

Tools I use for tracking Traffic, Keywords and Sales.

1. Google Analytics.
2. Google Webmaster Tools.
3. StatsCounter.
4. Awstats(you can usually find this on your server if you have c-panel)

Tracking lets you know how people come to your site daily, weekly or monthly, which ads or keywords converted and how you can rinse and repeat what you have done.

3. Unsubscribe from all Marketing Lists!!!
Yes, I used to read and get on everyone’s new list, sometimes these marketers pitch great stuff, but mostly they’re just trying to get their sales numbers up. Forget them and move on!

Don’t waste time reading their bull, get to work and start building your sites and promoting the products on them. Think of the internet as the real world, your website is a shop and its there to sell stuff. Sell those products and Build your own list!

4. Don’t Buy Every Making Money Online Product You See.
When I first started IM I would buy any guide that looked promising but that is unnecessary. Everything you need to learn about Affiliate Marketing can be found online for free. List building, Website Traffic, How to Build a Website, Video Creation, Social Bookmarking and so on can be all found online, FREE!

Only buy things you need, Hosting, Domains, WP Plugins, Advertising and Software. Learning material is all over the net, actually just read this website .

Tip: Focus on selling the products on your website, yourself and think like a Business Owner.

5. Read All Terms and Conditions.
I have never had an account terminated because I have always stuck to the rules and have read the TOS of all companies I join, however, I have seen many newbies fail and lose their accounts because they didn’t. Before you buy anything or join any affiliate network online, make sure you read all of their terms and conditions. Avoid getting your accounts deleted, being banned for life and being sued by sticking to the rules.

With all that having been said, those are 5 Mistakes I have encountered or made as an Affiliate Marketer.
